Volunteers working as the Friends of the Northern Rail Trail in Grafton County developed 23 miles of track into four-season trail use starting in 1996.

The trail is open to hiking, snowmobiling, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, and bicycling, but motorized wheeled vehicles are prohibited.
